...in the previous episode_Part 1. Since we all know that the cyberpunk era is about synthetic materials and advanced alloys, the importance of steel in Inertix Exoblade project can hardly be overestimated.
     A huge amount of work has been done and in the first part of our update report we will tell and show how we became one of those who produce our own M390 in Europe.

As a result, we conduct research-investigations on "how to eat it properly and with what".

The first and most difficult, it turned out, was to find out the decoding of the abbreviation M390 - many experts and lovers of knives and even blacksmiths are sure. But there are enough riddles for today, and here are the results we have come to (although we have made a request to the plant https://www.bohler-edelstahl.com/de/kontakt/- have not received an answer yet) -
M - stands for martensitic steel.
390 - the lower temperature threshold of hardening in Fahrenheit.
So, cyberpunk friends, steel is hardened at abnormally low temperatures, but in a special vacuum environment.

The result of such a complex work and a steel formula rich in variety, an excellent alloy for super-cutting is obtained, moreover, you should know that this steel was invented not for knives, but for spheres - where a super-resistant cutting edge is needed, and only then the knife-makers noticed it hyper properties.

All this information about steel cannot be obtained from open source and this is our own research. Further, we found out that some representatives of the world powder metallurgy produce an analogue of the M390 - someone calls it their own way, someone sells fakes under a black flag.
Our legal department gave the following review: 

“a mixture of powders cannot be patented, like the metals in it(but the title M390 has copyright), and the proportions are the only option to keep secret, it is aesthetically correct to register its name, and in the description indicate what steel looks like. "

From each workpiece with an electro-erosion device (super-precise and super-thin cut - almost no seam is visible if you insert the cut workpiece into the source), we get two excellent blades.

 At the same time, the second group of our molds is involved in the production of titanium handles (also copper, bronze and aluminum will appear in October 2020).

The advantage of molds is that the products are produced with a perfect surface and excellent uniform quality.

 Below in the photo you see a batch of handles obtained by baking in an hour. Every day we are able to produce up to 200 handles from any metal at a minimal cost.

Another very interesting news - we have another improvement filed for a patent.

Immediately 3 patents per week, but first things first - how was that ... 

In the process of endless tests, assembly and disassembly of Inertix Exoblade, certain features were discovered that could prevent you, dear friends, in the near future from assembling your own custom devices. The reason for the difficulties was the peculiarity of the grooves along which the blade moves. Specifically, in order to install a new blade you would have to rub it yourself, that is, spending several hours continuously rubbing the blade against the handle is unacceptable. We made a willful decision to improve the mechanism while metallurgists were fighting for the fineness of the blade. 

 In fact, we walked along the edge for 2 months and every day conferred whether or not to move in such a risky direction for the timing.
But it was impossible to improve everything - the new solutions did not work at all or gave a terrible backlash - and backlash sounds like a sentence in our case ...

 And so, at some point, the chief creator, Alexander Krivosheya, sent everyone on vacation for a week and sat down in the workshop ... when everyone returned, everything was ready ... And, lo and behold! Alexander completely abandoned the grooves and fundamentally altered the mechanism without changing the appearance and functionality!

 In the next update we will show a video with the updated mechanism! 

 Within ten days, there will be another extensive update that will combine the expert data. metals, video of work of the updated configuration and the main news will be a photo of all finished blades + all ready-made components for the final assembly!

_Part 1.

Since we all know that the cyberpunk era is about synthetic materials and advanced alloys, the importance of steel in Inertix Exoblade project can hardly be overestimated.
    A huge amount of work has been done and in the first part of our update report we will tell and show how we became one of those who produce our own M390 in Europe.

Steel grade M390 - martensitic, with a high chromium content, powder steel. Optimum hardness 60-62 HRC. The carbide content in steel M390 is about 20%. Very high wear and corrosion resistance. Popular, it is used with pleasure by both serial manufacturers for premium knives and private manufacturers. The recommended angle of sharpening of the M390 steel blade is from 30 degrees. When sharpening, the burr is minimal. Sharpening itself is usually not a problem.

PROPERTIES OF STEEL ELEMENTS:

Carbon (C, Carbon): improves edge retention and increases toughness; increases hardness and wear resistance; reduces plasticity; in large values ​​reduces the corrosion resistance.

Chromium (Cr, Chromium): increases hardness, tensile strength and density; increase resistance to corrosion (> 11% makes the alloy stainless).

Manganese (Mn, Manganese): increases hardenability, wear resistance and toughness; used as a deoxidizer and degasser to remove oxygen during metal smelting; in large% increases hardness and brittleness.

Molybdenum (Mo, Molybdenum): increases hardness, strength, hardenability and density; improves machinability and corrosion resistance.

Nickel (Ni, Nickel): adds toughness; improves corrosion resistance; reduces hardness.

Phosphorus: Considered a harmful impurity. It dissolves in ferrite, thereby increasing strength, but reducing ductility and toughness with an increase in the tendency of steel to brittle. In low alloy steels with about 0.1% carbon, phosphorus increases strength and resistance to atmospheric corrosion. It is considered a harmful impurity.

Silicon (Si, Silicon): increases strength; used as a deoxidizer and degasser to remove oxygen during metal smelting.

Sulfur (S, Sulfur): Generally considered a harmful impurity affecting ductility, toughness, weldability, corrosive properties, steel surface quality, etc. The harmful effect of sulfur reduces the presence of manganese in the steel. The sulfur content in high-quality steels does not exceed 0.02-0.03%.

Vanadium (V, Vanadium): increases strength, wear resistance, increases density and toughness; increases corrosion resistance by increasing the oxide film; vanadium carbide inclusions are very hard.

The modeled composition is fed into a special mold of the Inertix Samurai blade.

We could take the easy route and create blades from off-the-shelf steel - but the unit price would rise to $ 400.
At the moment, we have sent the first samples and are awaiting an official examination of the spectral analysis for public confirmation of the brand.

    We can't wait to tell you about the progress of the Inerix project,
    so this unscheduled introductory update on the production of the blade
    for the Exoblade in steel grade M390.

M390 

"High price is the only drawback..."

As previously stated, the M390 blade is the best solution for a good pocket knife
    and we settled on this choice and do not regret it at all. A good premium cut
    that does not need to be sharpened often, because a reliable long-lasting sharpening
    is very important for us, always busy with something urban users. Striking appearance
    and high scratch resistance, as well as a unique feeling of power - all this should be. But this material, ready for final processing, is very expensive and Inertix could cost
    a couple of thousand dollars, if not for one interesting technology that we use and
    which has a primary, perhaps most important role, in the birth of this miracle.

M390 is relatively stainless. Due to the large amount of chromium in the composition, there is little chance of corrosion. This is especially noticeable in comparison with other hard steels, which are known for their sharpness, but are easily corroded...

All steels have a different production technology

So, a little scientific approach about M390 technology itself.

______Powder metallurgy is a technology for producing metal powders and making products
from them (or their compositions with non-metallic powders). In general,
the technological process of powder metallurgy consists of four main stages:
powder production, powder mixing, compaction (pressing, briquetting) and sintering. Used as a cost-effective replacement for machining in mass production.
The technology makes it possible to obtain high-precision products.
It is also used to achieve special properties or specified characteristics
that cannot be obtained by any other method.______

 Manufacturing of powder products. 

A typical technological process for manufacturing parts by powder metallurgy consists of the following main operations: charge preparation (mixing), molding, sintering and calibration.

 Preparation of the mixture.

Mixing is the preparation, using mixers, of a homogeneous mechanical mixture of metal powders of various chemical and granulometric composition or a mixture of metal powders with non-metallic ones. Mixing is a preparatory operation. Some manufacturers of metal powder for pressing supply ready-mix.

It is the creation of the mold that is the most important process in terms of accuracy, since any error is irreparable!

Powder shaping.

Products are molded by cold pressing under high pressure (30-1000 MPa) in metal molds.
Rigid closed molds are usually used, the press tool is usually oriented vertically.
The mixture of powders is freely poured into the cavity of the die, the volumetric
dosage is regulated by the stroke of the lower punch.

Then comes sintering, calibration and additional operations...

Good Day to All Brave Cyberpunks!


 We decided to double-check everything again with the drawings,
 the mold also "asked" for an extra couple of weeks of reconciliation for super-accuracy,
 the project audit will help meet the deadlines and give the brain the ability to create
 a quality product. For this reason, we are updating the project timeline, the dates
 have shifted by 3 weeks, but this will save months of unnecessary improvements
 and our&your good mood!
